CHOIR GIRL
A lonely photographer, Eugene, becomes obsessed with an underage prostitute, Josephine, in his rundown neighbourhood.
Josephine has escaped a war-torn country only to be trapped in the illegal sex trade by corruption and a powerful underworld criminal named Daddy.
With little choice, Josephine becomes Eugene's muse and his photographs could be a way out for both of them.
Yet is Eugene helping Josephine? Or using her?
Set in the mid-90's and filmed in stark black and white, Choir Girl is written and directed by John Fraser, his feature debut, and produced by Ivan Malekin of Nexus Production Group.
Choir Girl is a dark tale drawing on the nihilism of Taxi Driver, the censure of Lolita and raw independence of The Jammed, as well as the controversy surrounding the work of Australian photographer Bill Henson. The film tackles loneliness and obsession, the struggle for recognition, and the blurred line between art and morality, posing the question "how far would you go for your dream?"
